So tonight we discussed the challenges of editing and revising, andsome of the strategies available to writers.
A full set of tweets from tonight’s chat follows, but here some keypoints I took from the discussion:
- The value of leaving a piece of written work and coming back to it witha fresh pair of eyes
- The ‘primacy of editing’ in the writing process (ProfCGibson)
- Editing and revising are linked activities which are complementary
- Being able to overcome perfectionism to create a full draft of awritten piece (it can’t be edited and revised until it’s written in some formand editing is a major component of the writing process)
- Sharing work with others rather than hanging on to papers for too longand trying to get then perfect – writing is always ‘abandoned, not finished’(FionaMacKichan)
- Reading back through a first draft and generating key headings as a wayof checking out if the paper’s structure and argument flow (backward mapping)- Reading your papers aloud to get a sense of how they read- Managing different styles of writing with co-authors, but also theopportunities to learn (and replicate!) their writing styles
